The 2026 field season opened on October 17 under a hard Algarve sun. 2 teams went into the hills that morning, each to its own site in rock laid down in the Late Triassic, about 230 million years ago.

At the first site, an excavator bit into the slope while 9 people worked the rock face behind it and walked the hills around it. By afternoon the crew had cut down to a layer that looks promising. Tomorrow they dig into it.

On the slopes, the prospecting group turned up what appear to be fossils of marine reptiles, with fossil fish beside them.

Some of us found some really nice and interesting fossils while prospecting.

At the second site, the team of 8, which includes Leonardo Bonelli, spent the morning rigging a cable line to send buckets of sediment from the top of the slope to the bottom. Then they dug toward the layer they expect to hold fossils. The rock fought them all afternoon, so tomorrow they bring a generator. The team stays on site all week.
